About / The Design Process
How does Studioalto practice Environmentally Sustainable Design?
The first criterion of the Studioalto design process is a communication product which strives for environmental sustainability. This is embedded in the studio philosophy and influences every design decision made. Throughout the process, the following is considered:
- What is the best way to communicate to the audience? Is print appropriate or would a website, email or pdf be equally or more effective? Electronic communication can reduce environmental impact greatly.
- If print is most effective, what is required to produce the proposed design? Can we do more with less? Can it be made smaller, lighter or from less materials? Can the piece serve more than one function? Can recycled, alternative or renewable materials be used? How much energy will it take to produce? Will there be any hazardous waste or pollution?
- How will the product be disposed of? Is reuse possible? Is recycling practical and encouraged? Does the message justify the waste?
Instead of limiting the design process, these considerations become a model of challenging conventions and often provide new possibilities resulting in greater value and impact of the communication product.
