The Phoenix Fridge Project is an initiative of the Brotherhood of St Laurence with both positive social and environmental outcomes.
Fridges are one of the major energy users in the home, responsible for around 15 percent of household greenhouse gas emissions in Australia. The project collects unwanted and under-used fridges (i.e. beer fridges) and retrofits them to improve efficiency. The fridges are then resold at an affordable price to low income earners. The project also offers training and employment opportunites for disadvantaged job seekers.
To help communicate this positive initiative to the public, the studio devised a friendly campaign with the hero being a classic fridge that puts the 'retro' in 'retrofit' – complete with halo and wings.
