Monash Student Association
The Monash Student Association is a non-profit organisation that serves and represents the interests of students at the Monash University, Clayton Campus. The MSA consists of many departments dealing with concerns ranging from welfare, sexuality and environmental issues, to organising activities and offering recreational courses, clubs and societies.
Studioalto has assisted the MSA to not only improve the quality of their frequent and varied communications, but do so on restricted budgets by offering alternative, cleaner solutions.
Assessment of existing practices of the MSA had shown that increasingly diminished funding due to Voluntary Student Unionism and tight deadlines meant that cheapest production solutions were most often the favoured option to the detriment of environmental sustainability which the organisation strives for, and consistent quality design and branding when the organisation needs it most.
To achieve greater value products, Studioalto investigated ways the design process could be made more efficient and economise on individual projects while improving design, branding and maximising impact as a whole. It became increasingly apparent that the best way to improve communications without increasing project costs was to identify essential components of the projects, and use resources more wisely. Some individual examples of this include:
- Assessing and eliminating unnecessary variables, while increasing environmental value of the product.
Eliminating unnecessary extra colours and replacing an unsustainable stock with a higher quality, Australian-made 100% recycled resulted in a saving of almost 20%.
- Refining content and design for a more concise product.
Smarter layout design of a 56 page Survival Guide for new students reduced the amount of projected printed stock by 20% on a run of 4,000 copies - a substantial reduction.
- Consolidating jobs for single production runs.
Where possible, 'ganging' jobs on the press for less waste and lower cost.
- Big impact on a small budget.
A need for event poster advertising, but a tight budget resulted in a one-colour/one-photocopier solution with a series of five A4 posters tiled together for maximum impact.
Studioalto continues to work with the MSA, and is currently redesigning its website for greater accessability, while also working on a campaign to entice students to become members of the organisation voluntarily.
