Sailing into Melbourne

Land Ahoy!

Client: Old Treasury Building Museum What we did: Environmental & Exhibition, Print

Next Port of Call: Melbourne

The ports of Melbourne have a colourful history as one of Australia’s largest ports of call, and the exhibition ‘Sailing into Melbourne’ features an impressive display of nautical history highlighting this extraordinary past. Sailing into Melbourne showcases major records from the collection of Public Record Office Victoria, covering grim stories of quarantine, devastating shipwrecks and grand voyages from Australia to Europe carrying large amounts of gold.

Studio Alto was once again commissioned by the Old Treasury Building Museum to design a part of this exhibition, comprising of two feature walls showcasing different categories of port history from past to present, as well as an illustrated map of Melbourne’s port district. Drawing inspiration from nautical flag design, we devised a highly modular graphic identity for Sailing into Melbourne which also served to demarcate the ports’ historical categories.
