Moving Pictures: A two-part exhibition to transport you back in time

All aboard

Studio Alto was privileged to work on Trams: Moving Pictures, an unprecedented exhibition showcasing archived photographs of the Transporting Art project, as well as a detailed look into the history of Melbourne’s tram system via an illustrated timeline and various artefacts.

The brief

Our task was to design a cohesive visual identity and display system for two unique content themes in a common space. Our solution draws on the much loved (and imitated) iconic tram rolls, a homage to the vernacular typographic styles of the time.

Transporting Art

From 1979 to 1992, the Victorian Ministry for the Arts commissioned a selection of Australia’s leading artists to paint Melbourne’s iconic W-class trams as part of an engaging initiative that brought vibrant art onto the streets of Melbourne as the trams plied their routes.

The project involved 36 artists, including Howard Arkley, Mirka Mora, Michael Leunig and Mental as Anything. In 2013, eight new artists were selected to revive the original ‘Transporting Art’ concept, turning Melbourne’s trams into dynamic public artworks.
